What are anxiety disorders?
When children or young people are confronted with an anxiety disorder, they often suffer from anxiety attacks. If there is no valid reason for the anxiety and the young person concerned experiences (social) problems as a result, there is a disorder. Some of these disorders are called "phobia". Social phobia, for example, is characterized by a significant amount of fear in one or multiple social situations. It causes distress and impaired ability to function in at least some parts of daily life. These fears can be triggered by perceived or actual scrutiny from others. Individuals with social anxiety disorder fear negative evaluation from other people.
Anxiety is a worry about future events, and fear is a reaction to current events.
Effects of anxiety disorders
Fear is a physical and emotional reaction to situations that a young person experiences as anxious. This can be expressed in both a physical and an emotional reaction. All teenagers and young adults sometimes have to deal with anxiety, but in some young people the anxiety is so great that it keeps them from living a pleasant life. He or she can also feel anxious in 'normal' situations, where there is no reason for this feeling.
A panic attack often occurs with teenagers and young adults suffering from an anxiety disorder. It is an intense attack of fear and tension. Both physical and psychological complaints are characteristic of a panic attack. During a panic attack someone often has the feeling of losing control. However, there are also physical complaints: cold chills, nausea, sweating, pressure on the chest, breathlessness and trembling.
